The Rum Diary is adapted from the book of the same name by the author Hunter S Thompson a friend of Depp. It tells the story of American journalist Paul Kemp, who takes on a freelance job in Puerto Rico for a local newspaper during the 1950s. He stares through a telescope at the mogul’s mansion and spots her hopping aboard Sanderson’s yacht in a skimpy bikini.
